
If your chakras are out of balance, it's important to rebalance them. Why? Because you are body, mind, and spirit, and disruptions or imbalances in your energetic system can cause all kinds of issues relating to your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. So whether your chakras are blocked, underactive, or overactive, these techniques can restore balance so your body, mind, and spirit can function optimally.
Visualize a Column of Light Flowing Through Your Chakras
A simple visualization can help to balance your chakras and remove blocks or calm overactive energy. To visualize:
- Sit or lie comfortably somewhere you won't be disturbed with your eyes closed.
- Start by taking a few deep breaths, breathing in deeply through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
- When you feel relaxed, visualize a beam of white light rising up from the earth and entering through your root chakra, which is located in the center of your body at the base of your spine.
- Visualize the light flowing up from the root chakra to your sacral chakra, which is located in the center of your body just below your belly button.
- Continue moving the light up through your solar plexus chakra, which is located at the base of your sternum in the center of your body.
- Now, continue moving the light up to the center of your chest, which is your heart chakra.
- Continue to visualize the light flowing upward, now to the center of your throat, which is your throat chakra.
- Bring the light up to the center of your forehead, which is your third eye chakra.
- Finally, visualize the light continuing to flow upwards and out of the top center of your head, which is where your crown chakra is located.
- Move the column of light up and down your chakras a few times, paying special attention to the places where it's difficult to make the light move. Finish with the column of light extending from your root chakra deep into the earth to ground yourself.
- When you're ready, open your eyes.
Use Crystals

You can place the appropriate crystals on each of your chakras while you're lying down to rebalance energy. Combine them with the above visualization or simply lie still and focus on your breath for 5-10 minutes while the crystals do your work.
- Root chakra: A red crystal, such as garnet, or a black crystal, such as hematite
- Sacral chakra: An orange crystal, such as carnelian, or a brown crystal, such as smoky quartz
- Solar plexus chakra: A yellow crystal, such as citrine, or a gold crystal, such as pyrite
- Heart chakra: A green crystal, such as moss agate, or a pink crystal, such as rose quartz
- Throat chakra: A blue crystal, such as sodalite
- Third eye chakra: A purple crystal, such as amethyst
- Crown chakra: A white crystal, such as selenite, or a clear crystal, such as clear quartz
Chant a Mantra
Mantras are short words, sounds, or phrases that you repeat over and over. Sound has a frequency that can unblock or rebalance chakras. The simplest types of sounds to use are vowel sounds or bija mantras. Choose one or the other of these and chant them for 2-3 minutes with each mantra in the order they're written.
Bija mantras:
- Root - LAM (pronounced lahm)
- Sacral - VAM (pronounced vahm)
- Solar plexus - RAM (pronounced rahm)
- Heart - YAM (pronounced yahm)
- Throat - HAM (pronounced hahm)
- Third eye - OM (pronounced ohm or aum)
- Crown - silence
Vowel sound mantras:
- Root chakra - "Uh" as in duh
- Sacral chakra - "Oo" as in you
- Solar plexus chakra - "Oh" as in go
- Heart chakra - "Ah" as in craw
- Throat chakra - "Eye" as in cry
- Third eye chakra - "Ay" as in say
- Crown chakra - "Eee" as in bee
