You can take the girl out of the ‘90s, but you can’t take the ‘90s out of a girl’s snack preferences. With Y2K fads back and better than ever, I can’t help but be drawn back into the snacks from my adolescence's orbit. And as I dived deep into 1990s and 2000s snack culture, I discovered that the favorites we claimed as #just90skidsthings aren’t so ‘90s after all.

Kool-Aid Is 98 Years Old

As a kid, while stomping around the neighborhood pool circa ’01, my brother's and my cool drink of choice was an equally delicious and zany Kool-Aid Burst. I can vividly remember tearing those plastic tab tops off and fighting with a half-punched hole. But Kool-Aid Bursts — with their early ‘90s birth — aren’t old enough to make this list.

Regular Kool-Aid powder, though? That’s way older than you’d think. That multi-flavored powdered drink mix  in 1927 thanks to a Nebraskan named Edwin Perkins. Originally marketed as Kool-Ade, this dehydrated drink went on to become a childhood favorite for so many of us.

Fast Fact

Kool-Aid debuted with : cherry, grape, lemon-lime, orange, raspberry, and strawberry.

Yoo-hoo Is 97 Years Old

As someone who comes from a long line of ancestors who believe the best kind of chocolate milk is the kind that has more chocolate syrup than milk, Yoo-Hoo was a passable substitute you could drink in a pinch. When I was young, I chalked the shelf-stable treat into the same category as Ovaltine — a touchstone of my parents’ generation.

Naturally, I was far off, but not too far. Natale Olivieri is the mind behind this , introducing the first iteration in 1928 — the very same year my grandfather was born.

Terry's Chocolate Oranges Are 93 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360938-850x566-terrys-chocolate_2056739294.jpg

One of my many favorite things about the winter holiday season was getting gifted Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. As a chocolate and orange lover, there’s no better combo than this interactive dessert.

Of all the snacks on this list, Terry’s Chocolate Oranges might be the one that surprises you the least. Something about that classic packaging and flavor combo feels antiquated, which makes perfect sense when you realize the company behind the treat opened in 1767.

It’d be well over a century before the whackable snack was born. They released the and have been making them ever since.

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360939-850x566-homemade-oatmeal-cream-pie-cookies_322781954.jpg

My first favorite Little Debbie snack? Oatmeal Creme Pies. Let’s just say, I’ve never escaped the rumors of being an old lady trapped in a kid’s body.

While I can’t stomach the overt sweetness of my brother’s favorites — Cosmic Brownies, Fudge Rounds, and Star Crunch — I still enjoy the rush of a delicious Swiss Roll, Zebra Cake, and Oatmeal Creme Pie.

Oatmeal Creme Pie, with its basic ingredients and simple appeal, was a no-brainer recipe for Depression families. O.D. Mckee — the man behind Little Debbies — in 1935, and it's lasted all these years.

Rice Krispies Treats Are 86 Years Old

Summer in the early 2000s meant many things, including getting a prepackaged treat after a swim or day at camp. Rice Krispies Treats, with their iconic blue packaging, were one of my brother’s favorites and still deliver the same chewy, sugary delight.

Despite feeling like they’d fit right in with other ‘80s and ‘90s kids’ snacks, these sweet marshmallow treats were born in 1939, thanks to the culinary curiosity of Kellogg employee .

Nesquik Is 77 Years Old

Ovaltine might have been the popular powdered chocolatey drink of my parents’ generation, but Nesquik was the stuff of ‘90s kid dreams. While that Nesquik mascot felt like the perfect modern response to Bugs Bunny, he was more Bugs’s peer than you’d ever expect.

Bugs Bunny and company were causing hijinks across cinema screens in the early 1940s, and Nesquik — introduced as Nestlé Quik — in 1948.

Fast Fact

While Nestle originally only offered a chocolate powder, they introduced banana in 1954 and strawberry in 1960.

Eggo Waffles Are 72 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360942-850x566-Eggo-Frozen-Waffles_2011317554.jpg

My high school morning routine went something like waking up at 5am, stumbling downstairs and putting in two homestyle Eggo waffles into the oven, and browsing whatever throwback program was airing on cable. You could say I was just as much of a fan of Eggo waffles as Eleven in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things.

And while frozen waffles don’t feel shocking as a 1980s breakfast option, having Eggos lining frozen shelves in the 1950s does. Eggo released their iconic frozen waffle product in 1953, , a name that was doomed to fail from the start.

Fast Fact

Eggo Frozen Waffles had a long-forgotten Humpty Dumpty-style mascot called Mr. Eggo.

Pop-Tarts Are 61 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360947-850x566-Pop-Tarts_2421727927.jpg

I remember the very first Pop-Tart I ever tried. The year? 2002. The flavor? Grape.

I wasn’t immediately blown away chewing on that Pop-Tart in a friend’s living room recliner, but it’s safe to say that they grew on me. Too many kids in my elementary school snacked on Pop-Tarts for them to feel like a product with history.

But everyone’s favorite filling-filled thin pastry was far older than anticipated, celebrating its , the same year that The Beatles first toured in America.

SpaghettiOs Are 60 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360944-850x566-SpaghettiOs_599112692.jpg

The longer that this article goes on, the more food-first memories I unlock. My first taste of SpaghettiOs? A 2004 afternoon spent sick at home with strep throat, watching a VHS copy of Holes. I was hooked for years, and they became a summertime favorite.

What 9-year-old me never would have guessed was that the popular spaghetti-inspired dish was just a couple of years older than my parents. Campbell’s in 1965, and after all these years, they’ve still never lost their childish charm.

Pringles Are 57 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360945-850x566-Pringles_1852179946.jpg

Part of the ‘90s kid lifestyle was carrying your own plastic Pringle-shaped Pringles container in your lunchbox. We had several spread out throughout the house, and they never went unused for long.

My first favorite Pringles flavor was cheese, though my Pringles-related tastes have expanded a lot since then. As a ‘90s kid, Pringles felt (and still feel) like such a ‘90s thing that it still blows my mind that these silly-shaped chips were introduced in the .

Fast Fact

Pringles were initially called Pringle’s Newfangled Potato Chips.

Capri-Sun Is 56 Years Old

https://cf.ltkcdn.net/www/images/slide/360946-850x566-Capri-Sun_1053803687.jpg

Capri-Suns are as Y2K coded as Lunchables and Surge. These little fruit-flavored drink pouches are still popular with kids for a reason! Though they’re a bit too sweet for my adult taste buds, I’ll still give them a go every once in a while.

Naturally, you’d expect them to be a late-‘80s or ‘90s innovation, but they actually harken back to 1969. Groovy, right?
